HubSpot Payments & Subscriptions

Discussion from 12/2023

We have two primary asks.1) We are currently using HubSpot payments via the Stripe integration. We are trying to better understand the difference between using HubSpot payments, versus the Stripe integration of payments. They are very similar, but some things are different and it's not clear to us which is better. Full disclosure, when we set up HubSpot payments, we did not realize there were two options, and just did the first thing we saw. We'd like to better understand the differences between the two options.2) We are interested in using HubSpot payments for our subscription services. We would like to see a Demo of how the subscriptions and renewals actually work. We want to make sure we have the flexibility we need (while also trying to really simplify the process). I am not an expert on those processes, so the other team members will have more specific questions. We've read the documentation, but it isn't clear in our minds how things work.

Our subscriptions are not completely straightforward. We have standard products, but we also do lots of bundling and custom projects (some of which renew each year). You can see our standard products here:  Services | Subscriptions Catalog (ftrintel.com)

Followup email:

  1. We have our current subscriptions in another system (around 2,000). If we want to convert those over into HubSpot subscriptions, what would that basic process look like? Is that an import or something else?So right now I admittedly don't have the best answer for you - there's no way to bring everything over to HubSpot without having your buyers reenter payment information. This is done by either sending along a HubSpot link on renewal or by "ripping off the bandaid" and sending the "we're switching systems up, we'll cancel the current subscriptions" email. Good news though - my team is just now exploring and testing doing all of this automatically, I'll make sure I log this feedback and put you all towards the top of our ungate list for this
  2. Can we add new properties to the subscription object? We would like to bring in some of the properties from the other system. Not at the moment, I'm curious what some examples of properties you'd want to add are though because this isn't something I've gotten much feedback around
  3. Our clients often switch roles/jobs, and we switch the subscription to another contact. How is that switch handled in HubSpot? For example, renewal is coming up and we find out that the client has left the company, but a colleague is taking over the subscription. So we want to make the switch and have the correct contact running through the renewal workflows. You'd simply associate the new contact with the subscription and remove the old one
  4. We have yearly price increases. We also have customers who have deals that give them a price for year 1, a higher price for year 2, and the retail price at year 3, for example. How would we make price adjustments to subscriptions?A few ways - you could schedule separate line items out with different prices OR you can manually edit a subscription
  5. Are subscriptions associated with both Contact and Company (so they are visible in both locations)? Can they be associated with custom objects as well?Yes and yes to both!
